St Paul’s Anglican Church, Burwood NSW
Situated prominently along Burwood Road, St Paul’s Anglican Church stands within the Anglican inheritance of Sydney as one of the enduring ecclesiastical works of Edmund Blacket. Constructed in sandstone in the Gothic Revival tradition, the church is marked by its tower, slate roof, carved stone tracery, stained glass windows, and the enduring presence of its historic pipe organ.
Built between 1889 and 1891 and listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register, St Paul’s has remained a place of prayer, sacramental worship, sacred music, and gathered Christian life for generations within the heart of Burwood.
Within the church, stone, timber, candlelight, sacred music, and filtered light through stained glass together form a Sacred Place ordered toward reverence, ceremony, and the solemnity of Christian marriage.
The Parish Hall
The Parish Hall sits immediately beside the church, providing a dedicated reception space within the same parish setting. The ceremony and reception can therefore take place together, eliminating the time, expense and disruption of transporting the couple and their guests between venues.
Built in the 1960s, the hall forms part of the heritage-listed parish setting, providing a practical reception space within the historic grounds of St Paul's.
From Ceremony to Celebration
The ceremony remains in the care of St Paul's and its clergy. As the ceremony concludes, The House of Chelsea carries the celebration through into the adjoining Parish Hall, guiding the couple and their guests into the reception without the need for transport between venues.
A House representative is present before the ceremony to ensure the reception arrangements, the photographer and the transition are ready. After the ceremony, guests may pause to greet the newly married couple before being welcomed into the hall, where the reception continues with dining, conversation and celebration. From the conclusion of the ceremony, The House of Chelsea conducts the reception, while the church's ceremonial responsibilities remain with the church.
Where the clergy wish it, a blessing may be offered before dinner — a grace that belongs to the church, and is never a requirement of the day.
